Despite the fact that Togliatti has existed since the first half of the 18th century, there are almost no historical buildings in the city. The fact is that in the 1950s, due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station and the creation of the Kuibyshev reservoir, the “Old Town” was flooded, the inhabitants were relocated to a new, higher place, and all the quarters were rebuilt. The oldest buildings are buildings of the era of Stalinist classicism and several houses moved from the former urban area.
What can attract the attention of a tourist in Togliatti? Of course, everything related to the history of the industrial giant - AvtoVAZ and domestic transport, as well as the complex of structures of the Zhigulevskaya hydroelectric power station - are the pinnacles of engineering for their time. It will be interesting to look at the exhibits of the Technical Museum, walk along the square. Svoboda or on the territory of the Shlyuzova village.
What to see and where to go in Togliatti?
The most interesting and beautiful places for walking. Photos and a short description.
Sakharov Technical Museum
Museum and park complex, opened on the basis of Avtovaz OJSC at the initiative of the enterprise management. The institution was named after its founder, Vice-President K. G. Sakharov. In addition to cars, railway and military equipment (tanks, helicopters, ships, armored vehicles), the exposition presents samples of weapons from the First and Second World Wars, as well as models of spacecraft, submarines and engineering equipment.
Museum of JSC "Avtovaz"
Until recently, the exposition of the Museum of JSC "Avtovaz" was part of the Technical Museum. Sakharov. Now it is a separate collection located in the building of the company's Corporate University. It consists of models produced at the enterprise from its very foundation. Here you can see the first "penny" - Fiat124, painfully familiar to "Niva", "Priora", "Grant", as well as exotic specimens specially created for racing, difficult routes, scientific research.
The park area has been located on the territory of the Avtozavodsky district since the 1970s. Within its boundaries, a memorial was erected in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Victory, and the Eternal Flame burns. Also throughout the park there are commemorative plaques with the names of soldiers and military equipment. For visitors, alleys are laid along which benches are placed. In the evenings, thanks to the many lanterns, the area is well lit, which is convenient for late walks.
It was from this square that the mass building of Tolyatti began (at that time the city was called Stavropol). The main components of its architectural ensemble are buildings erected in the style of Stalinist classicism: administrative buildings, residential buildings, a puppet theater built in the 1950s and 60s. In the center of the square is the obelisk of Glory, dedicated to the heroes of the Revolution and the Great Patriotic War.
Monument to Tatishchev
V. N. Tatishchev is an outstanding scientist, statesman, historian and founder of many Ural cities. In 1737 he founded Togliatti. A monument in honor of this extraordinary person was erected on the banks of the Kuibyshev reservoir in the late 1990s. The statue is an equestrian statue of Tatishchev, placed on a 14-meter pedestal. Funds for the monument were collected by the townspeople.
Monument of devotion
The monument is located in the Avtozavodsky district in the courtyard of a residential area. It is dedicated to a dog named "Faithful" (according to local reporters), who survived an accident and waited for his deceased owners on the track for 7 years. Local residents have repeatedly tried to take the dog home, but she always returned back to the road. After the death of the animal in 2003, a touching monument was erected in his honor with the money of the townspeople.
"History of transport"
Sculptural composition installed in the late 1970s. It represents models of transport structures of the beginning of the 20th century: a steam locomotive, a balloon and a paddle steamer. All parts are made of metal using forging, welding and casting techniques. The devices are placed on concrete pedestals. The composition can be considered a successful example of Soviet avant-garde art, its appearance is really impressive.
Memorial complex "To the creators of the city"
The sculptural composition was installed on one of the central squares of the city in the 2000s. It consists of a figure of Nicholas the Wonderworker sitting on a stone and a bell tower in the form of a wall with arches placed behind the saint. The area around the monument is paved with tiles, flower beds, lanterns and benches are located around. The author of the idea of the memorial was the local sculptor A. I. Rukavishnikov.
Togliatti Museum of Local Lore
The museum started operating in the 1960s. For several decades, its funds have accumulated more than 60 thousand exhibits, which formed the basis of dozens of interesting collections that give an idea of the history and culture of the region. Since 1979, the institution has been located on the first floor of a residential building, on Lenin Boulevard. Of greatest interest to visitors are collections of furniture from the 18th-19th centuries, old coins and rare household items, which are 150-200 years old.
Togliatti Art Museum
The institution opened in the 1980s. The occasion was the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city. Its funds contain more than 9 thousand paintings, graphic drawings, sculptures and objects of arts and crafts. Most of the exhibits belong to modern trends that are relevant for the XX-XXI centuries. In the museum you can see the works of local artists, children's drawings, art objects of the Soviet era, and even Chinese graphics.
Museum complex "Heritage"
The collection is located on the territory of the Starikovs' house. This is a wooden building, which in 1953 was moved from the flooded lands of the Kuibyshev reservoir. The exposition is closely connected with the resettlement of people in the high-rise buildings of the new Togliatti, from old dwellings that have irretrievably gone under water. Many took familiar items with them: cast-iron irons, wooden cradles, spinning wheels, old players - all this can be seen today in Heritage.
Drama theater "Wheel"
The theater was created in 1988 in a rather unusual format - performances were staged and actors lived in the same building. Of course, classical projects were not very suitable for these purposes, so a functional Soviet building was chosen for the stage. It was repaired, re-equipped and began to give performances. Today, in the repertoire you can see all the classic plays, works of the 20th century and modern works that are loved by everyone.
Puppet theater "Pilgrim"
Founded in 1973, the puppet theater is located in the building of 1958 on the square. Freedom (it is classified as an architectural monument). The building was erected in the style of Stalinist classicism, for which the characters are significant simplifications of the standard forms of this style while maintaining the overall appearance. The entrance is decorated with a Greek portico with massive columns, instead of traditional arches and stucco, there are simple rectangular windows and smooth walls.
The majestic cathedral with the height of the main dome of 63 meters rises above the even rows of high-rise buildings of the Avtozavodsky district and immediately catches the eye. This is not even a temple, but a whole complex that occupies an impressive territory and consists of several parts. It was built in the 1990s with the active participation of AvtoVAZ (the company acted as the general sponsor of the construction work). The plans of the diocese include the construction of a bell tower with an observation deck.
The male monastery was founded in 1997 by a resolution of the Synod. It arose on the basis of an Orthodox parish that had existed since 1996. The community is located on the territory of the building of the Stavropol Zemstvo hospital, erected at the beginning of the 20th century (it was moved from the place of flooding to a new part of the city in the mid-1950s). The monastery also owns the churches of the Resurrection of Christ and Silouan of Athos.
The temple complex of the middle of the 19th century, built by the landowner N. F. Bakhmetev in the hope of the recovery of his seriously ill wife Varvara. In the 1930s, the skete, like many churches, was closed and converted into a club and a shop. In the 1980s, its restoration began: the building was re-plastered, the walls were painted, the floors were laid out with marble tiles, and the domes were returned to the roof. Services resumed in 1989.
The building ensemble of Shlyuzovoy village
A complex of buildings of the middle of the 20th century, consisting of residential buildings and administrative buildings, which was built on the banks of a navigable canal. The quarter occupies three streets: Nosova, Nikonova and Shlyuzovaya. All houses are made with obvious architectural excesses and are decorated with columns, decorative elements, arches, porticos. Despite the emergency state of many buildings, the area is considered one of the most beautiful places in Togliatti.
Park of Culture and Leisure of the Komsomolsky District
A small cozy park in the central part of the city, more inviting to unity with nature than to standard entertainment (there are practically none here, except for a play area for children). In Soviet times, this place was popular with young people because of the dance floor. Today, guests can stroll along the alleys among the greenery or visit a musical evening to listen to a live orchestra.
The park was set up with funds from AvtoVAZ along with the Avtozavodsky District in the 1980s. It was created as a classic amusement park. Since 2005, they began to modernize and ennoble it, as a result of which a lot of modern entertainment has appeared: water and extreme slides, pools and much more. A petting zoo and an exhibition of exotic butterflies were also opened on the territory.
Castle Garibaldi in Khryashchevka
The hotel complex, stylized as a Gothic castle, standing on the banks of the Kuibyshev reservoir. It was built in compliance with all the canons of style: an abundance of lancet arches, towers with spiers, large masonry stone walls, stained-glass windows, decorative figures of gargoyles and other attributes of the genre. On the platform in front of the entrance there are figures of knights and the royal couple - they seem to meet guests who have climbed the wide stairs to the fortress wall.
Hydroelectric power plant on the Volga, built in the 1950s. It was one of the most ambitious projects of the Soviet government - the great building of communism. To implement it, they relocated the whole city and flooded vast territories. Today, after reconstruction, the HPP is the second largest in Europe. Every year, electricity generation is only increasing.
Gateways of the Zhigulevskaya HPP
Hydroelectric locks are wide navigable channels in which, with the help of special mechanisms, the water level is lowered and raised for the passage of river transport. Filling or draining takes an average of 8 minutes. The dams, walls and auxiliary structures of the locks are built of durable reinforced concrete. Highways and railroads are laid from above.
Fedorovskie meadows, located on the banks of the Volga, is the venue for the famous Grushinsky festival. During this event, tents of guests and performers are set up throughout the territory, surrounded by green meadows and trees. Perhaps the meadows can be called the most picturesque place in the vicinity of Tolyatti - it is not for nothing that in the summer season lovers of nature and hiking come here to relax against the backdrop of peaceful landscapes.
The bend of the Volga, concluded between the Saratov and Kuibyshev reservoirs and enveloping the Zhiguli mountains. This is a unique natural area with partially mountainous relief (although the maximum height is only about 400 meters), almost vertical cliffs and clearly defined slopes. Most of the Samarskaya Luka is a flat plateau with many lakes.
One can talk endlessly about the Volga and its beauties. In the Tolyatti region, it spills over into a wide reservoir and turns into the endless Zhiguli Sea. Although the reservoir is of artificial origin, this fact does not negate the beauty of the coast, the amazing color of the water surface in sunny weather and the feeling of the all-consuming power of the elements.
