Bosnia and Herzegovina is where Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian layers meet most visibly: Sarajevo's old bazaar gives way to imperial facades within a few streets, and Mostar's rebuilt bridge spans a river gorge in the south. The 1990s war remains part of the landscape in both cities.
