Armenia is compact and mountainous, and its defining sights are early medieval monasteries set in remote landscapes — Geghard cut into rock, Tatev reached by a long cable car, Khor Virap with Ararat behind it. Yerevan, built largely in pink tuff, works as the base for nearly all of them.

Summer is hot in Yerevan and pleasant in the mountains; winter closes some high passes. The borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, so overland routes run through Georgia or Iran.
