Croatia is essentially a coastline with a capital behind it. The Adriatic shore runs from Istria in the north past Zadar and Split to Dubrovnik in the south, with more than a thousand islands offshore and ferries linking the larger ones. Zagreb inland has a different, central European character.

Dubrovnik's walled old town is small and receives cruise traffic, so mornings and evenings are noticeably calmer.
