Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and most of its territory is Sahara. The coast holds Algiers with its Ottoman casbah and Roman sites at Tipaza and Djemila; the far south has the Hoggar mountains and the prehistoric rock art of Tassili n'Ajjer.
The guides here cover Algeria as a whole. Tourism infrastructure is modest and visas have historically been difficult, though rules have been eased for some nationalities in recent years. Desert travel requires guides and permits, and southern regions near the borders carry security restrictions. The coast is comfortable from spring to autumn; the Sahara is a winter destination.
