Lithuania's two main cities sit within an hour and a half of each other and pull in different directions: Vilnius has a baroque old town and a hilly, layered center, while Kaunas is flatter, more modernist and built up largely between the wars. The Curonian Spit on the coast is a separate landscape of dunes and pine forest.

Vilnius is compact enough to cover on foot, and the old town's courtyards — easy to walk past — hold much of what makes it worth the visit.
