Honduras is best known for two very different things: the Maya ruins at Copan near the Guatemalan border, with the most elaborate carved stelae in the Maya world, and the Bay Islands — Roatan and Utila — on the world's second-largest barrier reef.
The guides here cover Honduras as a whole. The dry season runs roughly December to April on the mainland; the islands are wettest from October to January. Diving certification on Utila has long been among the cheapest anywhere, which shapes who visits. Crime rates in the mainland cities are high, and most itineraries move between Copan and the islands rather than lingering in between.
