Description:

St Sophia Cathedral (aka Sophia of Kyiv) is a Christian temple in the central part of Kyiv, one of a few that survived back from the times of Kyivan Rus. The cathedral is an example of Ukrainian architecture and mural painting of the 11th-18th centuries; it is included into the UNESCO World Heritage as a cultural property. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) World Heritage includes cultural and natural values that are the property of all mankind. In addition to St Sophia Cathedral and related monastery buildings that are included into the UNESCO World Heritage together with Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, there 4 more sites included – 3 cultural and 1 natural. They are the ensemble of the historic centre of Lviv, the Residence of Bukovynian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, Struve Geodetic Arc, and primeval forests of the Carpathians. St Sophia Cathedral is one of the main Christian shrines, the historic centre of the Kyiv Metropolis. It is St Sophia Cathedral that is considered the oldest building of Kyiv. It was built similarly to the St Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople as the main shrine of the country. St Sophia Cathedral is situated on the premises of St Sophia Monastery and belongs to the Sophia of Kyiv National Sanctuary which also includes the Golden Gates, St Andrew Church, St Cyril Church, and Sudak Fortress. The Sophia of Kyiv itself consists of St Sophia Cathedral, the bell tower, the Metropolitan’s House, the refectory church, the brotherhood campus, the bursa (high school), the consistory, the Southern Entrance Tower, Zborovskyi Gate, the cells, the Monastic Inn, and Yaroslav the Wise’s Library Memorial Stella. In the Primary Chronicle, 1037 is stated as the founding date of St Sophia Cathedral when in the Novhorod Chronicle it is 1017. Prince Yaroslav the Wise is considered to be the founder of the cathedral though there is a version that it was Prince Volodymyr. The cathedral is dedicated to Sophia – the Holy Wisdom. The complexity of this term explains the grand dimensions and complex structure of the cathedral of thirteen domes. The interior of the Sophia recreates the medieval model of the universe when its appearance symbolises the image of the City of God. In the cathedral, a chronicle was kept; the first known library and school in Kyivan Rus were created here. St Sophia Cathedral has witnessed many outstanding historic events. Here, Kyivan Metropolitans were ordained and princes were crowned. For example, Volodymyr Monomakh was crowned as well as buried here. Prince Yaroslav the Wise was buried here. In 1169, Andriy Boholiubskyi has conquered and destroyed Kyiv – St Sophia Cathedral was robbed, all the golden items and relics were stolen. In 1240, Khan Batyi conquered Kyiv but the cathedral survived though it was destroyed and robbed. Although the cathedral was refurbished in the 14th c. in the 15th c. Kyiv was robbed and burned again, and during the next century the cathedral was abandoned. The revival of the Sophia of Kyiv is associated with the Kyiv Metropolitan Petro Mohyla who conducted the refurbishment and decoration of the cathedral. Monastery buildings were built around and the premises were fenced. To do the works, Petro Mohyla invited a famous Italian architect Octaviano Mancini. In 1638, a monastery was founded here. On the edge of the 18th c. Hetman Ivan Mazepa contributed to the refurbishment of St Sophia Cathedral – a new bell tower was built and the domes were gold-plated. In 1697, the wooden buildings of St Sophia Monastery got burnt in a big fire; the buildings were restored and the new ones were built in the style of Ukrainian baroque. In 1786, the monastery was closed. In 1917, Pavlo Skoropadskyi was given chrismation in St Sophia Cathedral, and in 1921, the ordination of the archpriest Vasyl Lypkivskyi as Kyiv Metropolitan of Ukraine took place here. In the soviet times, the cathedral was under the treat of being destroyed but the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine created St Sophia’s Commission which rescued the cathedral. In 1934, the premises of St Sophia Monastery were announced to be the State Historical and Architectural Reserve. However, the communists banned the service in the cathedral; all the golden and silver valuables were confiscated, the iconostases were taken down, everything else was burnt down. In 1941, the communists tried to mine and blow up the cathedral but luckily their attempt was no success. During the German occupation of Kyiv in 1941-1943, most of the exhibits of St Sophia Museum as well as some of the icons and pictures were moved to Germany. Finally, in 1990, St Sophia Cathedral and related monastery buildings were included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the Sophia of Kyiv, 260 m2 of mosaic each one having an inscription in Greek explaining its plot, and 3,000 m2 of frescoes have survived. Now, this is the Sophia of Kyiv National Sanctuary open for visitors Friday to Wednesday.
